 Give it a little jiggle

Darklife   is   published   as   PoD   and   Kindle,   due   to   my   chequered history   with   regard   to   traditional   publishing.   I’ve   encountered agents    who    couldn’t    spot    a    good    thing    if    it    was    inserted sideways,    or    were    more    interested    in    the    next    scotch    than finding    a    great    novel.    Twice,    I’ve    had    deals    with    publishing houses   agreed,   only   to   have   those   deals   collapse   before   they could   be   signed.   In   both   cases   due   to   an   editor   leaving   the company.   After   a   while,   you   stop   banging   your   head   against the padded wall. I’d   love   to   work   with   a   serious   publisher      who   means   what   they say,   says   what   they   mean   and   believes   in   their   titles.   I   feel   sure that    someone    is    out    there,    but    until    our    paths    cross    my intention   is   to   ‘give   (the   market)   a   little   jiggle’   making   Darklife available   to   early   adopters,   publishers   and      movie   makers   on the   lookout   for   something   different.   In   time   I   would   hope   to see   a   return   on   the   effort   and   belief   that   has   gone   into   getting the   book    this   far.   But   for   that   to   happen   I   also   need   luck…   and to write the sequel.

While   the   digital   world   is   a   godsend   for   those   of   us   who   prefer our   works   out   there   as   opposed   to   sitting   on   a   hard   drive, there   are   a   few   drawbacks.   PoD   paperbacks   are   expensive   to produce   to   order,   and   cannot   compete   with   the   price   of   similar sized   works   from   major   publishing   houses.   So   the   PoD   version of   Darklife   is   there   mainly   as   an   option   for   readers   who   prefer a    traditional    book.    I    have    no    expectations    of    selling    large quantities   in   that   format.   The   Kindle/eBook   formats   for   Darklife are   priced   very   reasonably   to   encourage   digital   readers   to   give the book a try. Both   versions   of   Darklife   are   works   I   see   as   more   about   getting the   word   out   than   an   attempt   to   make   real   money.   I’m   fully aware   that   I’d   need   a   level   of   distribution   and   promotion   on   a scale    that    no    individual    can    manage    in    order    to    sell    large quantities.   That’s   okay.   At   least   this   way   I   get   to   roll   the   dice   of fortune,   and   see   what   happens.   Double   six   or   snake-eyes,   it’s already been a great ride.
