Iconic Voices

Iconic Voices is a fictionalized autobiographical text divided into five parts: (1) Elvis Presley; (2) Marlon Brando; (3) Norman Mailer; (4) John Lennon; and (5) Andy Warhol. The lives and works of these five people were interconnected in intriguing ways. All of these people are now dead.

Iconic Voices is based on the conceit that all five are lost in the Afterlife, not quite knowing if they are dead or alive, but each remorselessly going over, in the first-person narratives, the highs and lows of their colourful lives, to give, between them, a detailed, if blackly satirical, picture of the turbulent times the famed individuals lived through – from the rock & roll explosion of the 1950s (Elvis), to the rebelliousness of the 1960s (Elvis and Brando), the social upheavals of the 1970s (Brando, Mailer and Lennon), and the ruthless commercialization of the arts in the 1980s (Warhol). In other words, a comprehensive, hugely entertaining picture of the past five decades and their growing obsession with ‘celebrity culture.’

Iconic Voices: The most outrageous of all ‘celebrity’ books in the Age of Celebrity

Beauty and the Beast

As a movie actor and ‘cult’ figure, Klaus Kinski was often described as a monstre sacre, a sacred monster, because of his ferocious, even frightening appearance and his often violent, demented behaviour, both on and off-screen.

By way of contrast, his daughter, Nastassja Kinski, was widely viewed for a time as cinema’s most angelic beauty, a possible successor to the ethereal, mysterious Greta Garbo, but a woman whose private life was often as turbulent and scandalous as her father’s.

When Nastassja made her second film, To the Devil a Daughter, many believed the title to be a deliberate reference to her odd relationship with her notorious father.

The story of Nastassja and Klaus Kinski is one of the most remarkable of all show-business stories… ranging from rags to riches, from Germany to Hollywood to the international jet-set, from unbridled sexual licence to drink and drugs, huge success and eventual failure… a story of artistic and emotional conflict between a lovely, highly talented daughter and her ferocious, uniquely talented father... the true, contemporary story of…

Deadlines: A Novel

It is the era of ‘moral campaigner’ Mary Whitehouse. Of Lord Longford’s anti-pornography campaign. Of the Christian movement’s National Festival of Light. Yet two publications defiantly reign supreme: the disgraceful ‘male interest’ magazines, Gents and Suave.

But in the offices of Saturnalia Publications, staffed by a bunch of highly chauvinistic boozers, pill-poppers and philanderers, the word ‘deadlines’ strikes true terror to the heart. It means that everyone must get whatever it is out of wherever it is and do some work.

All those not nursing hangovers are gripped by post-coital depression and even the stoned and slippery Art Director (Artful Ed to the trade) is busy freelancing at an undisclosed address. To make matters worse, a dreaded enemy has managed to infiltrate the building… a shapely shock-trooper from the sharp end of Women’s Lib!

The war between the sexes is about to be engaged as never before. The sexual mores of the Seventies are about to be laid bare…

“The most politically incorrect novel since The Ginger Man.”
-Dennis Elliot, Gents

“The most hysterically funny black comedy since Catch 22.”
-Harvey Wheeler, Suave

“Definitely my all-time favourite comic novel.”
-W.A.Harbinson, the author

Knock: A Novel

Readers familiar with my more commercial fiction should be warned that Knock is a very different kettle of fish. It is, in fact, a ‘literary’ novel, slightly avant garde, of the kind that many friends felt I should have continued to write, rather than the more mainstream novels that later made up the bulk of my career. It is therefore being republished purely for nostalgic reasons and because, despite a few reservations, it still holds a warm place in this author’s heart.
- W.A. Harbinson

"KNOCK belongs to an Irish tradition that runs from Charles Lever and Samuel Lover, down through Joyce, Beckett and Donleavy... It is a remarkable tour de force and, like all good novels, leaves the feeling that it could have been written in no other way."
-Colin Wilson, Afterword

"HARBINSON handles it like a virtuoso... A very Irish figure, this literary postman. He belongs really to the streets of Dublin - or perhaps Mr Harbinson's Belfast - not London. So do most of the other figures in this sad, moving, often beautifully funny and engagingly stately progress through a man's mind and past."

The Crystal Skulls

Two tourists, an effete Englishman, Tom Beale, and a streetwise New Yorker, Molly Beale, stumble upon an ancient, magically endowed crystal skull lying among the charred remains of human corpses on top of the Temple of Warriors at Chitchen Itza, Yucatan. In consequence, they are flung headlong into a desperate quest that will take them right around the world, battling all the way against the forces of evil, to a climactic confrontation at a site sacred through untold ages to humanity… And to something awesomely more than human… W.A.Harbinson views this as his 'Steven Spielberg' novel. 'Pure fun and excitement.' Originally published by New English Library in 1997, it is now available again.

Into the World of Might Be

Two astronauts, a man and a woman, are taking part in a scientific experiment designed to gauge the effects of prolonged isolation and weightlessness on the human body. At first everything runs smoothly, but then things start going wrong. First, the Skylab inexplicably malfunctions, then the astronauts have magical, fearful experiences. But are their experiences real or imagined? Is the Skylab haunted or not? Or are both of them simply going mad?

Into the World of Might Be is a tour de force of prose writing, an astonishingly vivid evocation of the bewildering ‘new reality’ of quantum physics, alternate or parallel universes, black holes and the mysteries of Time. Uniquely combining hard scientific facts with a philosophical, metaphysical and, at times, deeply religious work of fiction, this could well be the ultimate short text for the New Age… for a new generation. Read it and take wing.

Projekt UFO: The Case For Man-Made Flying Saucers

W.A.Harbinson’s groundbreaking non-fiction work, Projekt UFO: The Case for Man-Made Flying Saucers, was widely regarded as one of the most detailed and level-headed books ever published on this controversial subject. It was also considered by many to offer the definitive explanation for a mystery that had haunted the western world for the past sixty years. Now, at last, this revelatory book about ‘the world’s most fearsome secret’ is available to a worldwide readership. This new edition contains an introduction written especially for it by the author.

‘A fascinating account of the history of UFOs, but from the perspective of their being man-made, not extraterrestrial craft... Forget ETs and invasions from space; the terrestrial scenarios Harbinson speculates are already frightening enough!’
-Nexus

‘For sheer content and quantity, this book must score ten out of ten. It covers a multitude of topics including biblical encounters, airship scares, spinning discs, World War II sightings, UFO landings, UFOnauts, and much more. A very worthwhile addition to your stack of bedtime reading.’
-Encounters

‘Projekt UFO does a good job in describing the history and development of the UFO phenomenon and of the known record of military attempts to building a flying saucer... fascinating.’
-The Irish Times

All at Sea on the Ghost Ship

In the year 2001 the son of bestselling novelist and biographer W.A.Harbinson offered his father a free trip as the sole passenger on a container ship that would sail from Shanghai to Haifa, with other ports in between. Having just turned sixty and seeing his horizons shrinking, Harbinson decided that such a voyage was just what he needed

Once on board the ship, Harbinson found that he was the only white face in a crew composed solely of Indian officers and Chinese seamen. He also realised that while he had previously sailed on passenger liners, he was ‘all at sea’ when it came to a working ship. Finally, as this was a working ship, with no facilities for passengers, he decided to keep himself busy by dictating his every thought, night and day, into a Dictaphone and then transcribing the cassettes, on a daily basis, into his laptop. This narrative is based on those transcriptions.

All at Sea on the Ghost Ship is Harbinson’s account of his unpredictable, always fascinating voyage. Rich in feeling, acute in observation, and often very funny, All at Sea on the Ghost Ship is a book to give us hope and make us smile. It is also an intriguing, rare glimpse into the mind of a writer. Available now from Amazon.com.

The Writing Game
Recollections of an Occasional Bestselling Author

The Writing Game is an autobiographical account of the life and times of a professional writer who has managed to survive the minefield of publishing for over thirty years. Unlike most books on the subject, The Writing Game does not try to tell you how to write, or even how to get published. Instead, it focuses with gimlet-eyed clarity on the ups and downs of a unique, always unpredictable business.

On the one hand, a compelling look at a life lived on the edge, under the constant threat of failure, both artistic and financial, on the other, an unusually frank self-portrait enlivened with colourful snapshots of editors, fellow authors and show business celebrities, The Writing Game succeeds, as few other books have done, in showing how one professional, uncelebrated writer has managed to stay afloat in the stormy waters of conglomerate publishing.

Here, for the first time, a working author tells it like it really is…

Fans of the works of W.A.Harbinson should be fascinated by this frank and revealing account of his life to date. A second edition of The Writing Game is now available from www.amazon.com
